Graffiti (81 photos)
Photos of graffiti, some good and some bad... I'm not being judgemental; i like a lot of graffiti it just needs to have some artistic flair, expressing a message through the medium of paint... If you're going to tag, at least do it with some style (see the VIP tag on Bristol ice rink compared with the defacing of the boys school door)

Stokes Croft, cultural quarter (14 photos)
Stokes Croft is an amazing bit of Bristol, a place where graffiti artists can exhibit their skills. The Mild Mild West by Banksy is here as well as a variety of panels by other artists. Some of the buildings are up for redevelopment (hence no picture of the Mild Mild West; it's behind a big fence) and, judging by the comments on the consultation boards, looks like there will be a bit of a fight if the developers just want to drop in another faceless McStarbucks type development. Let's hope this cultural quarter gets the sort of regeneration it deserves, keeping the essence of what makes it Stokes Croft.

Science Fair, Frome (17 photos)
Becky and I went to Frome to help out with a science fair. The fair was held in a lovely non-conformist chapel, built in 1707 and abandoned in the late 1960's before being stabilised then later renovated in the nineties. In the period from its abandonment to its stabilisation by the local heritage society, the memorials were stolen from the interior walls and even the lead taken from the roof, leaving the building open to the elements. The wonderful modernisation has resulted in office space upstairs used by a firm of architects (who were also responsible for the design), a fantastic open space for arts and sciences downstairs plus a cafe area and more offices in a modern extension to the rear. A brilliantly creative example of how to save a Grade I listed buidling from dereliction.
The graffiti is on a wall in the carpark adjacent to the chapel although looking a bit faded in places, shows some obvious talent. Looks like the wall may have been done as a whole, presumably with permission

Fowey aquarium (7 photos)
These fish and shellfish live in an aquarium in the old salt store by the main square in Fowey. Their water is taken from the inlet and is always flowing. My favourite was an enormous lobster, the story goes the fisherman took it to the fishmonger who was astonished and, thinking that the lobster would be too tough to eat, suggested its donation to the aquarium where it lives to this day, getting even bigger! Unfortunately, I couldn't get a good picture of the monster as it was hiding....

Park Place and Pro-Cathedral Lane, Bristol (9 photos)
Photos of the old boys school, the convent, hall and the Cathedral of the Holy Apostles off Park Place and Pro-Cathedral Lane, Bristol. The buildings are all now in a terrible state of disrepair and are lucky to have survived at all, showing signs of fire, damage from break-ins and graffiti and being in one of the more expensive parts of town, what must be an ideal development plot. Indeed, the multi-storey carpark built on the adjacent plot hardly enhances the setting of these magnificent buildings. On the plus side, at least the buildings provide shelter to some of Bristols homeless although the use of the Cathedral as a skate park by kids doesn't seem quite right...
